Living Lab Safe Hydrogen Networks

In the Safe Hydrogen Networks living laboratory, the ModuH2Pipe facility makes it possible for the first time to systematically test pipelines and their components under realistic yet extreme operating conditions.

This allows for the simulation of severe pressure fluctuations or high flow rates: pipelines are repeatedly exposed to pressures between 10 bar and 85 bar to replicate the starting up and shutting down of the system. Impurities can also be deliberately added to investigate potential aging and degradation processes in materials, as well as the operability of components.

The focus is not just on the materials—manufacturing, welding, and repair processes will also be tested and validated. To monitor the pipelines and components, non-destructive testing methods are being tested and refined under real-world conditions. The insights gained will feed into the development of digital diagnostic and decision-making tools, such as for calculating the remaining service life or optimizing maintenance cycles.
